The development of D.R.A.W. School dates back to early 2013 when a team of forward-thinking firearms instructors, Olympic team doctors, neurologists and trainers came together to develop a better firearms training platform for law enforcement officers. While it seemed ahead of it's time at that moment, it proved very quickly to be exactly what officers would need as attacks on law enforcement dramatically increased.
Basic law enforcement firearms training is based on traditional methods, which have remained the same for decades. While these are certainly capable of teaching an officer to shoot, they do not train them how to excel in dynamic environments. More than ever before, body cam footage of OIS incidents prove lethal engagements are happening at mind-boggling speeds. Simply put, traditional firearms training does not and cannot prepare officers for what they will face.
CONCLUSION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT FIREARMS TRAINING RESEARCH:
"DECADES OF TRADITION-BASED TRAINING UNIMPEDED UPON BY PROGRESS"
The overall goal of this group was to create a standardized firearms training program that was built around the latest scientific and athletic research to help officers increase their speed and accuracy, and at the same time increase their mental focus during high-stress situations. Accomplishing this goal also lowered the probability of liability by giving officers faster, clearer decision-making ability.
After launching in early 2015, D.R.A.W. School has proven to be the most effective way to train officers and keep them engaged in the firearms training process on a regular basis. With the introduction of the new Online Training System, officers and departments can regularly train to a much higher level of competence and mastery.
In May 2016, Police Magazine wrote a four-page article on the developmental background and early successes of the D.R.A.W. School program. This extensive article featured interviews with departments who saw success with the program.
For decades, athletic trainers and team doctors have been teaching athletes how to overcome the negative effects of high-stress situations and perform to a very high level, both mentally and physically. So the question begged to be asked, "If athletes can be trained in such a manner, why can't officers be trained to do the same?" The result of asking that question and searching for the answers is the most comprehensive and effective method of firearms training available to law enforcement today.
D.R.A.W. School teaches officers how specific processes of the brain work during high-stress situations and how it executes commands for physical function. The officers are taught how the body mechanically functions and in what sequence. Finally, officers learn the fastest way to perform each function in the shortest distance possible. Without this understanding an officer's performance will suffer greatly. However, when officers train using the D.R.A.W. School method, they increase their speed of recognition, their speed out of the holster, the speed of their dynamic movement, their accuracy increases, along with their level of safety.
SIMPLE, YET HIGHLY EFFECTIVE:
"TRAIN INLINE WITH HOW THE BRAIN AND BODY ARE GOING TO NATURALLY FUNCTION."
Many traditional training methods and techniques were carefully studied and scrutinized during development. Any techniques or training methods that did not employ proper body mechanics, ergonomics, or follow the brain's natural sequence of functionary execution were discarded. D.R.A.W. School trains officers to perform functions in the same sequences that the brain naturally fires those impulse signals in high-stress situations. This helps officers to increase their speed to levels rarely achieved, while allowing for greater mental focus and decision-making ability.
Every firearm used in D.R.A.W. School training classes, instructor schools and online training courses is made safe with another innovation, BarrelBlok. To learn more, click the link to the right.
Just as crucial as the curriculum, a special two-piece firearms safety and training aid was also developed to allow officers the ability to safely and realistically train with their firearm. BarrelBlok not only blocks the chamber, rendering the firearm safe, it also allows for full mechanical functionality when training. Better training means better performance!
Have you ever heard the terms recoil management, muscle memory or bent is better? Over the decades, law enforcement firearms training has been based on outdated shooting methods. Most methods rob officers of the natural speed, accuracy, and mental focus needed to successfully counter today's threats. D.R.A.W. School exposes the methods and myths that have plagued law enforcement firearms training for years.
Firearms training is a perishable skill. Simply put, if you don't use it, you will lose it. If officers are not continuously training with their firearm, their ability to to use that "tool" in an effective manner will diminish rapidly in a short period of time. Allowing weeks and months to go by between firearm training sessions seriously impacts an officer's proficiency and performance with a firearm.
STAIR-STEP TRAINING METHODOLOGY:
"SHORT, FOCUSED, CONTINUOUS TRAINING SEGMENTS INCREASE RETENTION."
D.R.A.W. School was developed and is built around a highly-effective, proprietary instructional methodology that can be taught in person or online. It helps departments train their officers effectively, efficiently and economically. D.R.A.W. School uses short, continuous training cycles to help each officer master the use of their firearm and then immediately apply what they learn. This helps them to increase their speed for every function, increase their first and follow-up shot accuracy, as well as increase their level of safety when using their firearm.
And now, with the introduction of the Online Training System, officers can train on their own, at their own pace. It breaks down multiple complex processes into easy to understand steps that are mastered in the correct sequence. As a dynamic dry-fire training program, there are no limitations on when and where officers can train.
The D.R.A.W. School Online Training System is an LMS-based training platform that allows officers to train individually on their own or to allow a department to assign training courses to take. To learn more about the Online Training System, click below.
*All in-person and online D.R.A.W. School training courses are for sworn law enforcement officers and instructors, law enforcement affiliated college training programs, military, NRC security teams and other armed professionals only. Credentials will be required to have access to these courses. To find out if you or your organization qualify to attend or subscribe, please send your request via contact page.
